Read this Scripture, it will knock your socks off:
Romans 4:1-8
1What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter? 2If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about–but not before God. 3What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
4Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. 5However, to the man who does not work, However, to the man who does not work, However, to the man who does not work, However, to the man who does not work, Hhheeeeeyyyyy ! but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:7″Blessed are they
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
8Blessed is the man
whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”
Jesus is saying first and foremost, no flesh will boast before Him (1 Cor 1:28-29)
Secondly, to stop working to earn His favour and right standing before Him. The New King James Version says in v. 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt!
I looked up Debt in the dictionary and this is its meaning:
1. something that is owed or that one is bound to pay to or perform for another: a debt of $50.
2. a liability or obligation to pay or render something: My debt to her for advice is not to be discharged easily.
3. the condition of being under such an obligation: His gambling losses put him deeply in debt.
4. Theology. an offense requiring reparation; a sin; a trespass.
I looked up Obligation in the dictionary and this is its meaning:
1. something by which a person is bound or obliged to do certain things, and which arises out of a sense of duty or results from custom, law, etc
2. something that is done or is to be done for such reasons: to fulfill one’s obligations.
3. a binding promise, contract, sense of duty, etc.
4. the act of binding or obliging oneself by a promise, contract, etc.
5. Law.
A. an agreement enforceable by law, originally applied to promises under seal.
B. a document containing such an agreement.
C. a bond containing a penalty, with a condition annexed for payment of money, performance of covenants, etc.
Now v.4 is saying the only way your going to get paid today buddy, is, if you do your work! Turn up, work and go home, because this is your duty!
But Jesus is saying that if we continually work for our righteousness He will not pay us or cannot pay us! So He died in vain!
He will only pay us If I can use that word, if we stop working and believe in Him as Abraham did. In v. 5 He says “However, to the man who does not work, but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness,”
So If we don’t work we still get payed. Not bad hey? Wouldn’t you want a boss who could pay you weekly or monthly and you don’t have to turn up to work everyday? HHhhheeyeeeyyy
Oh, how amazing is that grace, how good is it. It’s the Love of God that leads people to repentance.
