One Pastor said that 10% should be the "floor" or minimum of our giving level. Still, what if what if someone backslides and gets so into debt that they cannot give 10%? I believe it's a matter of personal faith and obedience. New Testament giving should never be by doctrinal coersion, but by out of a genuine heart of thankfulness.

Now, IF the someone is having heart issues with giving, they need to seek the Lord and He will make a way to satisfy the desires of their heart. I guess you could say that long-term giving trends can speak volumes as what level the believers walk with Lord is at. Just plain and simple. I will confess that I am not giving as much due to the debt issue, but that may all be resolved once I declare bankruptcy and start fresh. Then, make a firm commitment to give 10+ percent to God's chosen work!

There really should be a true Jubilee for all in this matter! God-Bless!

The Malachi 3 chapter is interesting - Actually Yahweh was first directing his words to the unfaithful priests who if you consider Nehemiah was contempory in timing. He(Nehemiah)was heartbroken at the state of the temple and all the walls being broken down. Yes the people had failed in their tithing and keeping the Sabbath, but look to the background of why. Tobiah had been allowed to set up camp in the temple courts and then teh abuses were reversed. Tobiah - a pagan should never have been allowed in the temple (compromise) his name actually means prosperity/pleasure/good life - He had all the temple holy things turfed out ie wine, oil, vessels, offerings, tithes of corn so he could take his ease - what an imposter. As a result the priests were not taken care of and the sacrifices did not happen - so the people did not keep the Sabbath and as everything fell over they went back to work on the land.
So it is sad when Malachi 3 is used as the verses to hound believers re tithing. It is actually firstly adressed to the unfaithful priests.
